520 |a This report presents data collected for the evaluation of the Comprehensive Program for Science Teacher Education at the University of South Dakota and conclusions derived from these data. The participants in the study were inservice secondary science teachers enrolled in the Comprehensive Program. The participants were pre- and post-tested in: science subject matter competency; understanding of science; attitudes toward mathematics, science, science teaching, and laboratory work; and the nature of the science classroom, and laboratory activities which the participants feel should be used for secondary school science instruction. Resulting data are reported and analyzed, along with an extensive profile of the participants' teaching experience. The primary aim of the Comprehensive Program was to develop the subject matter and mathematics competencies required to teach modern science courses. Analysis results of the data collected in this evaluation show that this objective was met. As a result of this evaluation, the program focus at the University of South Dakota has been changed to be a much more direct collaborative effort with school districts within its region. This involves creating awareness of newer curricular materials, helping districts with adoption decisions, and then assisting with implementation. (MLH)
