520 |a A thorough study of changing student transportation patterns is justified on the grounds that (1) campuses are major traffic generators; (2) there is increased concern over the need to develop transportation systems that pose less ecological threat to the urban environment; (3) transportation patterns of students, faculty, and staff are changing and planning for the future requires an analysis of the changes. This study analyzes all significant changes in student transportation patterns at the University of California during the period 1965-66 to 1971-72. The study was initiated in 1972 when the number of bicyclists appeared to be rapidly increasing at several of the nine University campuses. The campuses were classified by their dominant student transportation orientation: pedestrian (San Francisco and Berkeley); bicycling (Davis and Santa Barbara); automobile (Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego); and auto-public transportation (Santa Cruz). The factors shaping student transportation patterns are discussed including proximity and concentration of student housing; availability and quality of alternative transportation modes; scale and intensity of environs development; topography of campus and environs; and campus and community transportation policies.
