Survey of Foreign Language Enrollments in Public Secondary Schools, Fall 1974. Final Report / C. Edward Scebold.

This study of foreign language enrollments in public secondary schools is the eleventh in a series that has been prepared by the MLA since 1958. The reports demonstrate the impact of the National Defense Education Act of 1958 on foreign language study and provide a quantitative measure of the progress made by foreign language study in the nation's high schools during the period 1958-1974. This report also shows the impact on high school foreign language enrollment of the recent trend among many colleges and universities to drop prerequisite requirements in foreign language. The report is based on a survey directed in spring and fall 1975 to all state foreign language supervisors. The results show that in Fall 1974, the public secondary schools (PSS) in the 7-12 range reported a foreign language enrollment of over 4.03 million, comprising 19.2 percent of the total PSS enrollment of nearly 21 million students. In 1970, 4.57 million foreign language enrollments were reported from the PSS population of 18.4 million students. The report consists of an introductory summary of results, summary tables, and individual tables by language which present a breakdown of enrollment data by region and state, with comparative data from surveys undertaken in 1968 and 1970.
