A discussion of the phenomenon of black single parent families and some findings from the investigation are presented. The eligibility requirements and recruitment of families for the study is explained with regard to the type of information being sought. In the families interviewed one parent was incarcerated and one parent was present in the home. The development of the research strategy and evaluative instruments is described. Literature on single parent families, and particularly black single parent families, is reviewed and discussed. The phenomenon's linkage to the American socioeconomic system is examined. A theory is developed concerning the variables affecting children in families with an absent parent. Preliminary findings and interpretations of the study are offered. Positive conclusions are drawn about the educational concerns of black single parents. (GC)
