Description
Summary:
In January 1976, Colgate University offered its first Winter Wilderness Survival Program in conjunction with the North American Wilderness Survival School (NAWSS). This post-program evaluation summarizes background of the three-week program, with attention to the leadership, program aims, how the course was publicized, and how it developed month by month, along with an account of communications difficulties experienced with NAWSS. Descriptions of the three phases of the program (at Hamilton, at the Colgate Camp at Upper Saranac Lake, and the nine-day field phase in the Dix Wilderness area) are given, including notes from a journal kept during wilderness camping. Comments from evaluations done by the nine students appear in the report as well as instructor's conclusions and recommendations on early planning, group size, clothing and equipment, the mix of indoor and outdoor training, recruitment, assessment mechanisms, and photographic records. Information in attachments includes a publicity sheet, registration form, outline of activities during the Hamilton phase, course evaluation sheet, cost breakdown, and list of students and instructors who took part in the program.
