Description
Summary:
Physical education, intramurals, and interscholastics are often key areas of study for staffs working to provide for the physical needs of the middle school child. This paper gives direction to the development of programs in physical education in this area. A brief analysis of the problems involved in physical education at the middle school level is followed by a position statement by the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators (MAMSE) on physical education, intramurals, and interscholastics. This position emphasizes that intramural sports should be the central objective in middle school physical education. A brief description of the learner is provided as well as a statement of middle school purpose, generalizations from literature on the subject, and identification of key program components. Practical ideas for making programs beneficial for the individual student are suggested. A source guide to reading materials is included. (JD)
