In addition to financial and academic difficulties, minority students are faced with such concerns as the low number of minority faculty and student support services staff; the dearth of cultural and social programs geared to minority students; an often unfamiliar and unsupportive campus environment; and an attitude of indifference or hostility of many administrators and faculty that make it extremely difficult for even the better prepared minority student to succeed. The data driven retention model described uses computerized monitoring and campus-wide committees to improve the recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of minority students generally, and particularly those in under-represented disciplines.
