Summary:
This report examines the childbearing experience and birth expectations of American women based on data collected in the June 1978 Current Population Survey. Among the major findings are that: (1) one-third of married women who were 18 to 34 years old at the time of the survey and who had given birth within 1 year of the survey are currently in the labor force; (2) more married couples are delaying having their first child; (3) increases have occurred in the proportion of first births born within marriage but conceived outside marriage; and (4) eleven percent of all women 18 to 34 years old in 1978 expect to remain childless. The bulk of the report consists of detailed data presented in tables and charts. (JMB)
