520 |a Some of the factors that have been considered in relation to the teaching of mathematics, especially to students in urban schools, are examined in this paper. First, information on the mathematics achievement levels of students with different demographic characteristics is presented; the extreme variance in achievement between students from high socioeconomic urban areas and those from low socioeconomic urban areas is shown. An extensive review of existing practices in mathematics education (in both urban and non urban schools) follows. School and classroom organizational patterns, curricula and instructional programs, class size, time allotment and use, teaching approaches, individualized instruction, student characteristics, instructional materials, the impact of Federal funding, and progress assessment (evaluation) are covered in this discussion. Next, strategies pertaining specifically to urban students, as identified in an examination of relevant ERIC materials, are outlined. Finally, long term research priorities are identified, with an emphasis on the scope of mathematics education, the teaching methods to be employed, and the effects of particular instructional procedures on urban children. An extensive bibliography is attached. (GC)
