Description
Summary:
The issue presents four articles on emotionally disturbed children. The first, "Philosophy and Practice--Always the Twain Shall Meet," presents an edited transcript of a panel discussion held at a 1977 Iowa study institute entitled "Philosophical Issues and Program Goals in Serving Emotionally Disabled Youth." Aspects covered include mainstreaming, special classes, and the right to be "crazy." The second article, "An Eclectic Approach to the Education of Emotionally Disturbed Children" by H. Lyndall Rich, describes an approach that emphasizes selecting the best strategy or pieces of strategy from those available and matching it to the needs and characteristics of the individual child. The third article, "A Teacher Responds" by Donna Wilkin, presents the author's critical response to the second article, reviewing what she sees as several problems associated with Rich's eclectic approach. The fourth article, "A Teacher Educator Responds" by Allen Parelius, also examines Rich's article critically, focusing on his terminology, the problem of incompleteness of the learning outcome component, and teacher competency ramifications for implementing the eclectic approach.
