|a The issue presents four articles on autism. The first, "Current Issues in Programming for Autistic Children and Young Adults" by Bruce Balow, examines six issues which touch upon such aspects as definitions, identification, placement, treatment style, programs needed, cost effectiveness, and influence on policy and politics. The second article, "A Parent Responds" by Nicole Raaz, presents the response of a parent of an autistic child to the first article. Each issue of Balow's article is examined critically. The third article, "An Iowa Professional Responds" by Polly Arp, presents the response of a supervisor of emotional disabilities to the first article, focusing on each of Balow's issues critically. The fourth article, "Autism--A Legislative Issue," presents the content of a state resolution passed jointly by the Iowa House and Senate in 1980 regarding the development of special programs for autistic pupils.
