520 |a A study examined the use of cable television in the context of general patterns of media use and habits of media users. Data came from telephone interviews with approximately 600 household heads, a third of whom did not subscribe to cable television. Information gathered included respondents' use of newspapers, television, and radio. Cable subscribers were asked their reasons for subscribing to cable television, the programs they watched on cable, their satisfaction with those programs, and the impact of cable television on their normal media use habits. Results showed that cable television subscribers were drawn disproportionately from home owners, married viewers, and those with children at home. Movies were most often viewed by those who rented their homes, single viewers, and the young. Sports programs were more popular with renters than with home owners, the young, and the male audience members. Religious programs were more popular with the stable, older members of the audience, and with those who had less formal education than with audience members who were more highly educated. In terms of the effect of cable television on the use of other media, the findings were inconclusive. There was, however, a suggestion that use of radio for news and weather information was adversely affected by cable use. (FL)
