Description
Summary:
This handbook was prepared to guide teachers who are concerned about dealing with the mainstreaming of students classified as disabled. Based on the experiences of Learning Unlimited, an alternative education program at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, the handbook emphasizes that individualized outcomes for students can be achieved by using traditional learning tools and applying them in nontraditional ways. The different chapters in the handbook present activities and provide ideas designed to enable the teacher to use available resources in such a way as to allow for greater individualization in instruction. Topics discussed include: (1) forming teacher support teams; (2) identifying and creating teaching styles for alternative education classrooms; (3) identifying successful alternative teaching methods; (4) setting classroom goals; (5) diagnosing students' needs and prescribing appropriate instructional options; (6) using resources; (7) motivating students; (8) measuring achievement; and (9) developing negotiated contracts as the bases for individual students' objectives and activities in particular classes. An appendix presents objectives, guidelines, and forms that one teacher has developed for a classroom options program. (Author/MJL)
