520 |a Intended for physical education teachers, the booklet offers ideas for incorporating aerobic conditioning into programs for moderately mentally retarded students. An explanation of aerobic fitness and its benefits is followed by information on initiating a fitness program with evaluation of height, weight, body fat, resting heart rate, and cardiovascular fitness. Following screening, a plan should be established regarding the frequency, duration, and intensity of exercise. Teaching principles should include avoidance of too much exercise, use of the overload principle, provision for progression, and adequate record keeping. Group and individual activities and games (running, walking, jumping rope, roller skating, stationary bike riding, obstacle course relays, relay races, and line games) designed to increase aerobic fitness are described along with teaching suggestions for each. Additional activities of dance and swimming are considered. (CL)
