|a Results of the 1985 Cooperative Institutional Research Program survey of entering college freshmen are presented. Of the 279,985 responses, 192,435 questionnaires from 365 two- and four-year institutions were used to compute the 1985 national norms. Findings indicate that the proportion of new freshmen planning to major in computer science and pursue computing careers dropped 50% in 2 years. Only 4.4% of fall 1985 freshmen aspired to careers as computer programmers or computer analysts, compared to 6.1% in 1984 and 8.8% in 1983. Significant declines in student interest in engineering careers and nursing and allied health fields also were found. Careers showing the strongest gains in fall 1985 were business and teaching. The proportion of entering students aspiring to business careers increased to an all-time high of 23.9%. For the third straight year, freshman interest in elementary and secondary school teaching rose slightly (from 5.5% in 1984 to 6.2% in 1985). The freshmen strongly opposed increased defense spending, and 54.2% believed that nuclear disarmament is attainable. Student political positions and views on the benefits of attending college, are also summarized, along with grade trends and parental income levels. (SW)
