Description
Summary:
This book considers the appropriateness of efforts for lasting and effective school reform, particularly focusing on the dissatisfaction many individuals feel about current reform efforts. Four related areas are discussed: (1) an overview of the American experience in education, its cornerstone and its sociological, economic, and philosophical foundations; (2) analysis of various attempts made during this century to improve schools; (3) projection of needed reforms that must be made if schools are to keep faith with their true owners; and (4) imperatives of lasting reform (selecting and preparing competent professionals for the schools, creating and maintaining an environment that enables and encourages the professional to make a career in the classroom, and developing and implementing a program of continuous school district evaluation). Chapters address: the recurring trial of public schools; why schools struggle to keep up; the making of a professional teacher; a professional career in the classroom; and an evaluation component for school systems.
