|a In spring 1986, the Center for the Study of Community Colleges analyzed the class schedules of 95 randomly selected two-year colleges to determine the types of liberal arts courses offered by the colleges and to spot changes in the curriculum over the past 11 years. Study findings included the following: (1) the humanities made up 48% of the total liberal arts curriculum, with English composition representing the greatest number of class sections; (2) the sciences made up 43% of all liberal arts class sections, while the social sciences made up only 8%; (3) English, mathematics, history, biology, chemistry, psychology, economics, and sociology were offered at 90% or more of the colleges; (4) over the past 11 years, the liberal arts curriculum has remained fairly stable, though in mathematics the number of courses for specific majors (e.g., "Mathematics for Business") decreased while the number of computer science courses increased; (5) English as a Second Language courses accounted for 30% of all foreign language classes in 1978 and 43% in 1986; and (6) the liberal arts curriculum was characterized by an abundance of introductory survey courses and a relatively small number of more advanced courses.
