Description
Summary:
This document contains the fifth volume of "Today's Delinquent," an annual publication of the National Center for Juvenile Justice. This volume deals with the issue of the family and delinquency, examining the impact of parental behavior on the production of delinquent behavior. "Parents: Neglectful and Neglected" (Laurence D. Steinberg) posits the thesis that identifiable behaviors of parents determine precisely when a child will begin violating the law, how serious the crime will be, and how long the behavior will persist. It identifies the parental behaviors that cause delinquency and the societal behaviors that cause parents to be derelict in rearing their children, and proposes a set of interventions tailored to prevent the onset of each identified type of delinquent behavior. "Parenting and Delinquency: Parent Training and Delinquency Prevention" (David P. Farrington) compares and contrasts Steinberg's theses about delinquency causation and control with his own research findings, and questions Steinberg's assumptions about the causes of delinquency. "From Behavioral Science to Social Policy: Look before You Leap" (Arden E. Melzer) responds to Steinberg's theses, criticizing Steinberg's suggestion that 12-month secondary schooling for all children and parent effectiveness training for children and adults will prevent juvenile delinquency.
