520 |a This book contains three major essays that consider the origins of the Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution. In "The U.S. Bill of Rights in Historical Perspective," Donald S. Lutz examines the intellectual context of the Bill of Rights by analyzing the changing ideas about rights in colonial, Revolutionary, and early national American political thought and culture. In "The Making of the Bill of Rights: 1787-1792," John P. Kaminski explores the political context of the Bill of Rights. In "The Bill of Rights: A Bibliographic Essay," Gaspare J. Saladino looks at the historiographical context of the Bill of Rights by surveying the voluminous literature, both in history and in lawyers' legal and constitutional history, on the origins of the Bill of Rights and the individual amendments composing it. This volume also includes an editor's introduction,"Restoring the Context of the Bill of Rights," by Stephen L. Schechter and Richard B. Berstein, and "The Ratifications of the New Foederal Constitution, together with the Amendments, Proposed by the Several States" as printed by Augustine Davis, of Richmond, Virginia, in 1788. (DB)
