This double issue of the "ZPG Reporter" focuses on the theme of ZPG's Children's Stress Index", the first national survey of children's well-being based on population- related pressures. Using an extensive list of social, economic, and environmental factors that affect the lives of children, the index ranks 828 cities, counties, and metropolitan areas in the United States. In addition to an article discussing the survey results, a description is provided for the 70 indicators used in the survey, including indicators in the following categories: population change and crowding; family economics; community economics; maternal and child health; crime; education; air quality; water resources; toxic releases and sewage; and energy and transportation. A complete listing of surveyed areas and their rankings is included. Also provided are guides to compare metropolitan areas of similar sizes, comparison by geographical region, and a list of the 50 best and worst metropolitan areas in the survey. Other articles in this issue cover the California drought, redirecting foreign aid, and an interview with the executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). (MM) |
