520 |a This manual explains how to implement the Master Teacher in Family Life (MTFL) Program. This training model is designed to teach natural leaders within poor communities the information and skills to create an effective internal communication system to educate fellow residents about important issues and create and sustain a network of support for those who want to use their new knowledge to make changes. Chapter 1 focuses on research-based information describing the barriers of families in poverty, policies that affect the poor, and ways MTFL addresses these issues and policies. Chapter 2 addresses use of the program to support long-term change through ongoing information sharing and community building. Chapter 3 gives a step-by-step explanation of how to implement the MTFL Model. Chapter 4 outlines the role of the trainer and the roles of "graduated" master teachers as they work for improved quality of life in their community. Chapter 5 offers sample interventions. Ten workshops or teaching modules follow that can be used to train master teachers. Components of each workshop are as follows: background, goal, objectives, materials needed, exercises, program evaluation form, exercise worksheets, and activity and resource handouts. Topics include values awareness, communication--listening, problem solving, understanding the behavior of children and adolescents, encouraging responsible behavior, program planning in the community, health issues, understanding the helping role, and understanding substance abuse. Contains 59 references. (YLB)
