Based on the assertion that community colleges are moving from the community-based paradigm of the past 30 years to a new paradigm combining the forces of learner- and community-based education, this book explores the role of leadership in changing the mission and culture of the colleges. Chapter 1 describes differences between the older top-down leadership style and the newer learner- and community-based paradigms, while chapter 2 reviews essential elements of future community college leadership related to personal mastery of leaders and staff, governing ideas, key processes, and cultural change. Chapter 3 examines the social and economic forces driving the changes in college mission and operation, while chapter 4 reviews the origins and functions of organizational culture. Chapter 5 discusses the importance of leadership in establishing a shared vision, chapter 6 focuses on the spiritual dimension of leadership, and chapter 7 applies the concept of learning-based education to community college organization. The eighth chapter examines problems with the traditional vertical management of the colleges; the ninth asserts the importance of staying student-centered in reorganizing colleges; and the tenth reviews elements of team-building leadership. Finally, chapter 11 examines the role of planning in revising the community college organization and culture, chapter 12 reviews the role of boards of trustees, and chapter 13 focuses on instructional design and content in the new organizations.
