Description
Summary:
In July 1995, the American Association of Community College's International Services Office conducted a survey of 1,154 colleges to gather data on the colleges' involvement in international education programs and services. The study sought to determine the types of international education programs offered, enrollment, the status of program directors, services provided to international students, the level of involvement with international organizations and foreign countries, sources of funding, and respondents' views regarding future trends and current problems. Study findings, based on responses from 624 colleges, included the following: (1) 505 of the respondents indicated that they offered some type of international education program, with international curricula the most commonly cited type; (2) 43% had supported some type of international education program for over 10 years; (3) academic or business connections were reported for 143 countries; (4) 476 respondents reported enrolling international and immigrant students, while the total international/immigrant student enrollment was 167,572; (5) 61% had a staff or faculty member responsible for international programs, with 73% of these full-time; and (6) 20% had received government funds to help support their programs. Appendixes include the survey cover letter and instrument, a policy statement on international education, lists of survey respondents and international program directors, selected current readings on international education at community colleges, and a list of international education organizations in which community colleges participate.
