520 |a Yakima Valley Community College (Washignton) developed "A Living-Learning Community" in the Student Residence Center to create an intellectually stimulating and socially exciting environment for both resident and commuting students. The project strived to enhance the students' collegiate experience by providing them with a learning community in which they receive academic and emotional support. Goals included (1) motivating commuter students to spend more time on campus by providing a residence hall student mentor; (2) creating a residence center with exciting activities that cater to the commuter and residence students; (3) supporting academic studies by offering tutoring and computers at the residence center; and (4) increasing access to educational resources to students not participating in the program. Of the services provided by the Living-Learning Community, the computer lab has proven to be most beneficial to the participants. The addition of this facility has greatly increased the students' access to and understanding of technology. Non-residents are spending increased time in the lab and taking advantage of the community's other resources, and residence hall staff has gained valuable insight regarding student development. Appendices include information for the Fund for Improvement of Postsecondary Education, program schedules, and computer lab information. (YKH)
