UCSMP began by examining the curricula of other countries for proven ideas and methods, creating textbooks and training programs at both the elementary and secondary levels, and engaging in extensive evaluations of its own work. One reason for the implementation of this project is that the information explosion and advances in technology have widened the scope and multiplied the methods of applied mathematics. Another reason is to counter the practice of many existing mathematics courses which avoid the real world and use contrived word problems instead. This document presents detailed information about UCSMP and explains elementary and secondary components of the project. A list of available materials and contact persons is included. (ASK)
