|a This publication contains four papers that identify issues within the adult and community education (ACE) sector. "Overview" (Annie Campbell, Peter Thomson) considers what defines ACE; who offers ACE programs; who participates in ACE programs and who does not participate; what are the barriers to participation; who is responsible for ACE; and what does the national policy say. "Who Uses ACE: Future Demand" (Martina Nicolls) assesses the supply of ACE and main factors that shape the total volume and character of supply and providers' capabilities; identifies major inequalities of supply and reasons; summarizes factors that shape and limit demand for adult education and training (AET); and identifies demand-side policy interventions to "widen participation.""Lifelong Learning in ACE" (Michael Sachsse) explores lifelong learning, considers ACE's role in making it a reality for all Australians, and looks at how ACE has evolved, underlying principles, and the extent to which they accord with those embodied in ACE. "Community in ACE" (Peter Norman) examines the scope, structure, and culture of community-owned and managed adult education in each Australian State and Territory; its features; the impact on ACE of changes in the education and training environment; and the value of community-owned and managed ACE in promoting learning. "Widening Participation in ACE" (Michael Sachsse) articulates issues in efforts to widen participation in ACE to include underrepresented groups, including identification, characteristics, and barriers to participation.
