The Faculty of the Future : A Transatlantic Dialogue. Proceedings Hosted by the University of Florence (San Miniato, Italy, 1999) / Madeleine F. Green and Lewis Purser.

Since 1989, the Transatlantic Dialogue Program has provided opportunities for presidents of U.S. universities and rectors of European universities to reflect jointly about higher education and their institutions. In the 1999 Translatlantic Dialogue, participants from 16 countries created a chart of key indicators that reflect institutional engagement with external constituencies: (1) serving adult or mature students; (2) the revenues derived from relationships with industry; and (3) service to the community. Much of the dialogue focused on future scenarios for higher education that could shape the work of faculty members. Changing expectations of society, the advance of technology, the explosion of information, and the end of higher education's monopoly on the creation and dissemination of knowledge mean that the future will be very different for universities. In other conversations, the dialogue focused on changing expectations for serving students and society and the ways that new behaviors and roles for faculty members will bring react to change or bring it about. These realities have already been recognized in the declaration of a European area of higher education signed by ministers of education from 29 European countries in 1999. The shared recognition of the strategic importance of higher education was echoed in this conference. (SLD)
