|a "The fear of crime has been recognized as an important social problem and empirical studies reveal that a significant minority of citizens in many countries express a fear of crime. In this book the authors review the literature and argue that old surveys involving intensity questions such as 'how worried are you about ...' may actually conflate an 'expressive' component of the fear of crime with an 'experiential' component. The authors contend that we can deepen our understanding of the term 'fear of crime' if we distinguish between those who actually fear crime in real sense ('experiential') from those who express a general anxiety about crime without having cause to fear crime in their day-to-day lives ('expressive')." "In a new approach, the authors combine quantitative data over the past decade with new theoretically informed questions to help identify the 'expressive' and 'experiential' groups.
