520 |a Dr. David Suzuki, Canadian academic, science broadcaster and environmental activist, delivers the keynote address titled, "From Hotshot Geneticist to Science Popularizer to Eco-Activist," at the 10th annual National Conference of the Society of Environmental Journalists held on the campus of Michigan State University. Suzuki reflects on his Japanese ancestry, how it impacted his family during World War 2, and how that experience drove his professional accomplishments and activism. Suzuki also explains how scientific advances have come with unforeseen dangers and asserts that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) "will also prove to have all kinds of unanticipatable, deleterious consequences." Suzuki uses the example of clear-cut logging in the Queen Charlotte Islands to illustrate human ties to nature. Suzuki is introduced by Canadian environmentalist and CBC corespondent Jacques Rivard.
