Description
Summary:
Return to Gorée: A musical road movie that follows Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour's historical journey tracing the trail left by slaves and the jazz music they invented. Youssou N'Dour's challenge is to bring back to Africa a jazz repertoire of his own songs to perform a concert in Gorée, the island that today symbolizes the slave trade and stands to honor its victims. The DVD includes the final concert on Gorée Island.
Les noms n'habitent nulle part: A griot (West African storyteller) traveling from Dakar to Brussels weaves a tale about African expatriates and offers a candid look at the life of African immigrants in Belgium. The title is a Senegalese proverb. The film stars Sotigui Kouyaté (1936-2010), a real life griot, as the storyteller. The DVD also includes Sotigui Kouyaté, un griot moderne--a 1997 film by Mahamat Saleh Haroun about one of Africa's greatest actors, musicians, and griots.
