Description
Summary:
"Vietnam: Many Reasons Why". Part six of twelve entitled "Trying to Win With L.B.J." Covers the period from the Kennedy assassination and the transfer of Vietnam policy to the new President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, to Johnson's decision not to seek reelection in 1968 following the Tet Offensive debacle. Looks at the coup that installed a military junta in South Vietnam and why North Vietnam became emboldened. Reviews Johnson's "guns and butter" policy of pursuing The Great Society at home and a war in Vietnam simultaneously, aiding the South Vietnamese people and expanding the military presence, culminating in the Gulf of Tonkin incident which provided the pretext to initiate bombing of North Vietnam and send combat troops to South Vietnam. Analyzes the early prosecution of the war. Features interviews with major American, French and Vietnamese participants in the American involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1975. Michael Charlton narrates.
