520 |a On this installment of "The people's platform," Dwight Cooke moderates a debate between Maynard C. Krueger, a socialist politician and professor of economics at the University of Chicago, and Louis M. Hacker, a professor of economics at Columbia University and the author of "Shaping the American tradition," on whether America needs a Labor Party. Krueger argues that both the Democratic and Republican parties have failed labor through the passage of the Taft-Hartley Act, while Hacker takes the position that labor unions have always worked through the major parties and by preserving the right to collectively bargain both parties have fought to help the labor movement. The two professors also engage in a vigorous discussion about the role of communism in labor unions.
