Description
Summary:
Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces General Dwight D. Eisenhower addresses a joint session of Congress to accept the thanks of America on behalf of the three million Americans who fought in Europe. Eisenhower showers praise on the American soldiers, saying that the Nazis appeared to be an unstoppable war machine when the Americans entered the war but were defeated by the unprecedented coordination of tactics among forces on the ground, in the air, and at sea. Eisenhower attributes this attitude of cooperation to the example set by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, both of whom he warmly commends for their leadership and support. Eisenhower also praises and thanks all of those involved in the war effort, from the combined Chiefs of Staff to those Americans who remained at home to help with the war effort. Eisenhower is introduced by Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn.
