Description
Summary:
Imagine that wind blows Monsanto's genetically manipulated seeds into your garden. Then this multinational corporation sues you for 00,000 for the illegal use of patented seeds. In a David-and-Goliath battle, farmer Percy Schmeiser challenges the firm's right to claim ownership of a living organism. He sues Monsanto, but the court rules that even if Monsanto's seeds are in his crop by crosspollination, the firm owns the entire crop as a result of its patent. Schmeiser appeals, and the court rules that, while he is not liable to pay a fine, the presence of Monsanto's seeds in his field infringes the patent and the firm owns every plant that carries the seeds' genes.
