520 |a Before he was convicted of murdering a policeman in 1981 and sentenced to die, Mumia Abu-Jamal was a journalist and writer. After more than 30 years in prison, Mumia continues to report, educate, provoke and inspire. Stephen Vittoria's feature documentary is a sympathetic portrait of a man whom many consider America's most famous political prisoner. Through prison interviews, archival footage, and dramatic readings, and aided by voices including Cornel West, Alice Walker, Dick Gregory, Angela Davis, Amy Goodman, this riveting film explores Mumia's life before, during and after Death Row. It shows us the racial tensions in the Philadelphia where Mumia grew up and became a Black Panther, and local and federal governments' war against the Black Panthers. It covers the movement to free Mumia, and his own writing and commentary from prison.
