545 |a Charles W. Bachman, Jr. was born in 1892 in Chicago, Illinois. Charlie played football for the University of Notre Dame 1914-16 and was a teammate of Knute Rockne's. He was the head football coach at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) from 1933-1946. He also coached at Northwestern University, Kansas State University, the University of Florida and Hillsdale College. The MSC football team was highly ranked during Bachman's years as coach and beat the University of Michigan four consecutive seasons (1934-1937). They also played in the 1938 Orange Bowl - Michigan State's first bowl appearance. Charlie Bachman was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1978. Bachman passed away in 1985 at the age of 93 in Port Charlotte, Florida.
