520 |a Judge George Leighton was born on October 22, 1912 in Bedford, Massachusetts. Although he left high school before graduation, Leighton graduated from Howard University in 1940 and earned his L.L.B. degree at Harvard Law School in 1946 after serving five years in the military. Leighton served as assistant attorney general of Illinois for two years before co-founding one of the country's largest predominately African American law firms in 1951. Leighton was elected Cook County Circuit Court judge in 1964 and began teaching at John Marshall Law School. In 1976, President Gerald Ford nominated Leighton to serve as a U.S. District Court judge. Leighton retired from the U.S. District Court at age seventy-five but began serving as counsel to Earl L. Neal & Associates. Leighton played a leadership role in governmental groups and participated in various civic groups. In 2012, the Cook County Criminal Courthouse building in Chicago was renamed in his honor.
