Social activist, professor and author Maulana Karenga was born Ronald McKinley Everett on July 14, 1941 in Parsonsburg, Maryland. He obtained his B.A. degree from the City College of Los Angeles. He earned his M.A. degree and a Ph.D. degree in political science and then a second Ph.D. degree in social ethics from the University of California. Advocating black power, Karenga formed the Us Organization in 1965. Karenga created the African American holiday Kwanzaa in 1966. From its founding, Kwanzaa continued to be celebrated worldwide. Karenga was a professor and chair of the Department of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach where he also chaired the President's Task Force on Multicultural Education and Campus Diversity. He served as the director of the Institute for Pan African Studies and the National Organization of Kawaida Organizations. He authored the mission statement for the 1995 Million Man March/Day of Absence.
