Entrepreneur and music manager Fred Jones, Jr. was born January 2, 1948 in Memphis, Tennessee. After receiving his B.A. degree from the University of Memphis in 1971, Jones worked as a tour manager for singer Isaac Hayes. In 1984, he founded Summitt Management Corporation to manage and promote entertainment events. Jones created the Southern Heritage Classic Music and Football Weekend and the Southern Heritage Classic 2 Basketball Weekend featuring popular competitions among historically black colleges and universities. He also created the Memphis Blues Festival. Jones has received numerous awards for his work and civic contributions, including the 1996 Black Business of the Year Award from the Memphis Black Business Association and the 2002 Award of Excellence from the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. Active in a number of civic organizations, including the NAACP and Leadership Memphis, Jones was also president of the Southern Heritage Foundation.
