Academic administrator and urban designer Harry G. Robinson III was born in Washington, D.C. January 18, 1942. Earning his B.S. degree in architecture at Howard University in 1966 and his M.S. degree in city planning in 1970, he received his M.S. degree in city planning and urban design from Harvard University in 1972. After serving in Vietnam, he was hired by the District of Columbia Redevelopment Land Agency in 1968. Robinson taught architecture and urban planning at Morgan State College from 1972 to 1979. Founding the Robinson Group, an urban design consulting firm in 1976, he was named dean of architecture and planning at Howard University in 1979, and vice president in 1995. He coauthored The Long Walk, a history of Howard University's purpose, campus, architecture, and buildings. Active in a number of domestic and international professional organizations, Robinson was the first African American to be elected president of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
