520 |a Architect Robert Madison was born on July 28, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from East Technical High School, he attended Howard University before leaving to serve in World War II as a second lieutenant. Madison received the Purple Heart and three combat ribbons. In 1948, he received his B.A. degree from Case Western Reserve University, the first African American to graduate from their School of Architecture and his M.A. degree from Harvard University. He completed additional studies as a Fulbright Scholar at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France. He opened Robert P. Madison International in Cleveland in 1954, the first such office in Ohio opened by an African American architect and only the ninth in the country. His professional affiliations include the American Institute of Architects. He received numerous honors, including an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Howard University and the American Institute of Architects Ohio Gold Medal Firm Award.
