Non profit executive Willis Franklin Earl Edwards was born on January 1, 1946, in Carthage, Texas. Raised in Palm Springs, California, Edwards graduated from Palm Springs High School in 1963. In 1968, he attended California State University, Los Angeles, where he campaigned for Robert F. Kennedy. Edwards was drafted into the Vietnam War where he was awarded a bronze star. He became the head of the California branch of the National Student Lobby in 1970. Los Angeles mayor Thomas Bradley appointed Edwards to the city's Social Service Commission in 1973. Edwards was elected president of the Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the NAACP in 1982, and persuaded NBC to televise the NAACP Image Awards nationally. In 1992, he coordinated Nelson Mandela's visit to Los Angeles. Edwards served as California representative to the national board of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He passed away on July 13, 2012 at age 66.
