520 |a Artist and sculptor Elizabeth Catlett was born on April 15, 1915, in Washington, D.C. She received her B. A. from Howard University and her M.F.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1940. Catlett began her work in Mexico City's Taller de Grafica Popular, graphic arts and mural workshop collective. There, she produced her first major show, I am a Negro Woman, a series of prints and sculptures, in 1947. She collaborated with several artists including her husband Francisco Mora and Frida Kahlo. From 1958 to 1976, Catlett directed the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico's sculpture department. In 1998, the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York honored her with a fifty year retrospective. Her works were also featured at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Catlett died April 2, 2012, 2 weeks before her 97th birthday.
