520 |a Jazz musician William "Buddy" Collette was born on August 6, 1921, in Los Angeles, California. Collette formed his first jazz group at age twelve, which included Britt Woodman and Charles Mingus. By the age of seventeen, Collette was performing jazz music professionally. He served in the U.S. Navy as a bandleader during World War II. After returning to the United States in 1949, Collette performed in Los Angeles with jazz musicians Edgar Hayes, Louis Jordan, Benny Carter, and Gerald Wilson. In 1950, Collette became the first African American musician to perform on You Bet Your Life. In 1955, Collette gained national recognition after he became a founding member of Chico Hamilton's legendary jazz quintet. Collette was a respected educator, teaching jazz musicianship at a number of universities across California. He recorded his last instrumental album in 1988, entitled Flute Talk. Collette passed away on September 19, 2010 at age 81.
