Trombonist and composer George E. Lewis was born on July 13, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois. At age nineteen, he joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and studied at the association's School of Music. He received his B.A. degree in philosophy from Yale University. Lewis wrote the computer software program "Voyager" to improvise with human musicians. In a 1993 recording of the same name, Lewis and saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell played duets with the computer. In 1991 he was named a Professor of Music, Critical Studies-Experimental Practice at UC-San Diego. Beginning in 2004, he served as a professor of music at New York's Columbia University. He wrote numerous journal articles and one book on the AACM. Lewis was recognized with a 2002 MacArthur Fellowship and a 2015 Guggenheim fellowship. Lewis' pieces have been performed extensively across North America, Europe, and Asia.
