The journal describes a series of trips in the United States, including a voyage through the Great Lakes, 17 April-13 June 1848; a visit to New Hampshire, 1-17 August 1850; and two visits to the Adirondacks 6-23 August 1867 and 15 July-1 August 1868. The diary also contains a brief entry for 19 July 1849, as well as accounts associated with the various trips.
