520 | |a Recaptures the birth of a new theatre from the Civil Rights activism of the 1950's, '60s, and '70s. Presents an encyclopedia of the leading figures, institutions and events. Clips from historic productions include the first all-black production of Genet's The Blacks, along with A Raisin in the sun, Black girl, Dutchman, and For Colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf. These plays marched onto the world stage and into American playhouses during the heyday of the Civil Rights ad Black Power movements. Out of the revolutionary demands for equality and self-determination came a cultural revolution that shook the theatre establishment with new aesthetics and narratives reflecting the exigent cry for racial justice. This film documents the birth of this new theatre and highlights the leading figures and events that transformed the American stage. Amiri Baraka, Ossie Davis, James Earl Jones and Ntozake Shange describe their aspirations for a theatre serving the Black community, and reveal how these actors and playwrights laid the basis for the Black theatre of the present. | ||
