500 |a "The way we get the money we collect for food and medicines into Afghanistan is somewhat unusual. We entrust it to young mujahiddin couriers. They smuggle themselves back over the border to their villages, where the elders decide how the money should be spent. Usually, it's food, because the Russians have burnt most of the crops in the countryside. So the couriers dodge their way past Russian patrols to Kabul, where supplies are plentiful. They buy what's required and dodge their way back fully laden to their villages. As we say, an unusual system. But then, we could hardly send the money through the Mosco Narodni Bank. And in fact our rather crude methods work out extremely well. We have no shortage of volunteers. What we are very short of is the money they risk their lives to carry. So please send us as much as you can. Quite a lot is being done for the 4 million Afghans who have fled the country. This is the only British charity working to provide food and medicines for the 11 million who stayed behind."--Text from bottom third of poster.
500 |a "Afghanistan Support Committee, 18 Charing Cross Road, London, WC2N 0HR. 01-3797218. Passes on funds to Afghan Aid, an independent charity (no. 282353) which provides food and medical aid for Afghans in need. The Support Committee itself is an all party pressure group working for Afghan freedom."--Bottom right of poster.
520 |a Poster shows black and white image of two armed Afghan mujahiddin couriers, each wearing a pakol, and staring straight into the camera. The man in front has a bandolier slung over his right shoulder. His right fist is clenched. The man in the rear holds up an unidentified long-gun. Except for their traditional caps, both men appear to be in western style clothing. Both have full beards. This poster is a plea for donations to help the civilian population trapped in war-torn Afghanistan.
