The elderly scholar Faust is returned to his youth by the satanic Mefistofeles for the pursuit of beauty and knowledge. In the sordid aftermath of two failed love affairs, he reflects on the illusory nature of worldly beauty, and through a mystical union with the divinity, dies redeemed.
