Description
Summary:
Roland Petit, Tchaikovsky, and Pushkin ... the genius of three artists comes together in this 2005 Bolshoi Ballet production of La Dame de Pique. Petit first choreographed La Dame de Pique ("The Queen of Spades") for the dancer Mikhaïl Baryshnikov in the early 1970s, set to Tchaikovsky's eponymous opera score. When in 2001 Petit received an invitation from the Bolshoi to create a new version, he re-read Alexander Pushkin's original novella and then set about developing a choreography based on a different Tchaikovsky masterpiece: his Symphony No. 6 "Pathetique." The resulting ballet is a profoundly theatrical spectacle performed with spellbinding dramatic commitment and virtuosic skill. "The cards are not only in hand, they are everywhere, on the walls, the ceiling, and above all in the spirit and heart, they are the destiny of everyone, the success or the despair and the insanity. How can the weight of destiny be vanquished, how can one become an irresistible decision-maker, how can one chase a love that you receive easily, to try to obtain an impossible love, love of the game that can make you a superhuman?"--Roland Petit
